Kayla is a ‘Youth Champion’ who is using her own experience of growing up in kinship care to improve the confidence and emotional well-being of younger children engaged in services within our Kinship Care Support Service.
Kayla is being cared for by her grandfather and has a very close relationship with staff and volunteers. She spends several hours each week helping staff and volunteers deliver programmes and activities to children who are coming to terms with the loss of a parent. Kayla is a fantastic support and contributes not only the emotional wellbeing of children, but also helps organise events to raise awareness of kinship care in her school and local community.
Kayla prides herself on helping others and says that her proudest moment has been listening to and helping other children and young people through their problems. Despite the death of her mum this year, Kayla is doing well at school and studying hard for her GCSEs.
Kayla presents a positive attitude to everyone she meets and is strong advocate for children and young people in the same situation as her. She envisages her future working with families and helping children and young people in kinship care rebuild their lives.
